表扬 (biǎoyáng= praise) vs. 赞扬 (zànyáng=praise)

1. 表扬 (biǎoyáng= praise): 对好人好事公开 (gōngkāi=to publish) 称赞 (chēngzàn=to praise) 。表扬 is used to praise someone’s skill, kindness, good looking. Learn Chinese Vocab: 参与(cānyù) vs参加

参与 (cān​yù=to participate in something): as you are personally invested in the participation of something as organizer/servicer. 参加 is a bit more relaxed, so you’re participating but not necessarily heavily invested. 1. 他参与 (cān​yù) 了奥运会 ( 他很可能是作为奥运会的组织者 (z ǔ ​ zhī​zhě=organizer) 或为 (wei4) 服务者 (servicer)) 。 He has participated in the Olympics (He was likely to be the organizer or the servicer of the Olympics). 2. 他参加了奥运会 ( 他很可能是奥运会的运动员 ) 。 He has participated in the Olympics (He was likely to be an Olympics athlete).

A. 普遍 (p ǔ ​ biàn): 一般用来形容一种现象 (phenomenon) 。 普遍 (p ǔ ​ biàn) means "common" as an adjective, and "generally speaking" as an adverb ( 副词 (fùcí)). 1. 我觉得这是一个普遍 (p ǔ ​ biàn) 的社会问题。 I think this is a common social problem. 2. 最近有报道 (bao4dao4) 称 (cheng1) ,中国孩子压力普遍 (p ǔ ​ biàn=generally) 较大。 There was a report recently that stated that China children' stress are generally relatively large. 3. 韩国人对我国普遍 (generally) 印象 (yin4xiang4= impression) 怎么样? If the following clause has a subject, 但是 / 不过 must precede the subject, while 可是 may precede or follow it. Learn Chinese Grammar: 但是(dànshì=but) vs. 可是(kěshì=but) vs. 不过(bùguò= but):

不过 is more informal and mostly used in spoken Chinese. 不过 has a softest intensity of tone (compared with 但是 and 可是 ). 不过 is often associated with the positive result. It includes, is used to say 'no' or 'negative thing' in a softer way (to avoid hurt someone's feelings) so it sounds 'positive.' (Here it also depends on personal preference). Examples: The house is new, but it's very dirty. a. 房子 (f á ngzi=house) 很 (h ě n=very) 新 (x ī n=new) ,但是 (d à nsh ì =but) 很 (h ě n=very) 脏 (z ā ng=dirty) 。 b. 房子 (f á ngzi=house) 很 (h ě n=very) 新 (x ī n=new) ,可是 (k ě sh ì =but) 很 (h ě n=very) 脏 (z ā ng=dirty) 。 (More used for negative result) c. 房子 (f á ngzi=house) 很 (h ě n=very) 新 (x ī n=new) ,不过 (b ù ​ gu ò ) 很 (h ě n=very) 脏 (z ā ng=dirty) 。 (Make negative result sounds 'positive')
